G. Macbeth & Zak1 understand the true definition of success... Both have experienced some of what the world defines as success.
G. Macbeth has been rapping since middle school and was involved in the music industry before he was fully doing it for Christ. During that time, he found himself talking about the most ratchet content you can imagine, but always felt inclined to dedicate a song or some intermittent lines to Christ. He was also in a secular R&B group called Motive. Around 2005 while recording a solo album things started to change and a simple challenge to himself, to make an album without vulgar language transformed into a new direction, to honor God through his art.
For his part, Zak1 has an impressive resume in the secular rap scene. Having worked with a number of well respected and well known artists from the Bay Area, he somewhat shies away from using that history to qualify what he is doing. Instead, he points to the fact that God was always with him, just waiting for him to turn to the Lord and surrender.
These guys understand true success. They don't define it by the numbers or popularity... or even by raw skill. Instead, they look to God to define success... and to Christ for the inspiration for their lyrics.
If you've ever wanted to watch a film and been told you need to watch the previous one to fully understand the new one... you will appreciate the intricacy involved in their new project "Sermon On The Mount." Like the sermon Christ gave in the Book Of Matthew, it too is built upon the foundation of the Beatitudes Christ gave to his followers near the Sea Of Galilee. Guaranteed you can rock this project without going backward and absolutely appreciate the style, flows, and overall sound. It's unique and in many ways cutting edge.
Yet, to really grasp what you're listening to, you need to go back to their previous project "B'Attitudes" where they provide a systematic extrapolation of the Beatitudes, seasoned with flavor from various pop culture references and a roadmap for modern application.
I could go track by track and attempt to explain all of the meaning in both of these projects... I could try to catch ALL the easter eggs hidden within the top tier lyricism. I would inevitably miss things. You need to hear this for yourselves.
After you chew on the meat of B'Attitudes, you'll be ready to STAND for the Benediction and receive the SERMON ON THE MOUNT. Certainly a Hip-Hop Classic that stands out in an era where artists are tending to focus on style over substance, these brothers have captured both eloquently and with excellence!
